Gaelcon is Irelands National convention, held in the second weekend of October in Dublin. It is organised by the Irish Gaming assocciation (IGA). With an attendence of between 4-500 people for the weekend, it is the biggest in the country. It also has the biggest repesentation of traders. The committee tends to be experianced people who have run conventions for their univeristy The venue has moved many times over it history. The current venue is the D4 hotel in Ballsbridge, which has its own pub, shop and pizzaria. The timetable has rpg's, larp's, ccg's, wargames, board.
Warpcon is organised by the gamesoc in University college Cork. They hold their event in the last weekend of January. Its nickname is the 'beer and pretzels' con. Of all the cons it's events are spread around the biggest area, with open areas for gamer's to 'gasp' go outside. It has a number of hostels near by that are booked up early. Many late night gaming sessions have been followed by gamers falling asleep at the morning game. The university is in the centre of Cork, with pubs, clubs and fast food to satify hungry gamers wandering the streets. John Kovalic (munchkin, Dorktower) is a reaccuring special guest that has been known to fill in blank cards with special instructions.
Leprecon is organised by the Trinity college game society. It is also the longest running convention in Ireland having begun in 1979. The convention is now held in the Trinity student center and not in the main complex. The con has been held in Febraury, but in 2010 changed to March. It is known for being well supplied by the traders and trying new ideas in how to run a con. In 2010 they had the name of the scenario outside the door. They also sold a mug which entitled the buyer to free tea and coffee for the weekend. They also have held blood bowl match with a difference. The attendee's were moved by the two coah's and had to throw and catch the ball.
Qcon is held in Queen's University Belfast by the DragonSlayers gaming and anime society. This is the only convention on the island of Ireland which combines gaming and anime into one convention. It has a much bigger attendee of 1000 people due to this. As well as the usual rpg's, larps, minitures, ccg's, lan and console games, there are anime screenings, events and cosplay. The con is held in June outside of the acedemic year. This means that attendees can stay the student doors for the weekend. The look and feel of this convention is differnt to any in held Ireland and would be similar to conventions in the U.K. Visters to Ireland should be aware that Northern Ireland is another country and you may have visa issues traveling from Ireland to N.I.
