Detailed break down of Irish conventions
Most conventions are organised by the university gamesoc or game society. This means that most of the events fall during the acedmic year. The two university exceptions are Qcon in Belfast (June) and Brocon in Limerick (July). K2's concept is a weekend away with gaming. They hire a hotel before the season starts and the only rule is every attendee brings a game. Qcon is also a mixture of gaming and anime convention. Normally anime convention's with cosplay etc have their own seperate events. Though some attendee's will come in costume. Three staples are the pub quiz, the charity action and the closing ceromony. Prizes for best player (rpg's and larp's), winners (ccg's and wargames), and best writer and the conbtribution to irish gaming award. With conventions having been run for the past twenty years gaming couples with children..... The usual structure is for an event to be held over a weekend, with some slots begining on friday night. The common goal of conventions is to offer a wide veriety of activities. So each three hour slot will have wargames, cardgames, Larps and rpgs and special events. Repitition tends is avoided and so that there would be only one D+D scenario during the con. With generic systems like Gurps it wont always hold true. Gaelcon is the most strict about doing this. Also there is one writer/s per slot to also give variety and to bring in new writers to keep the process going.
